The Sahara Desert, a region encompassing a dozen countries and a million inhabitants already greatly impacted by climate change, is a crucial topic of discussion at the 2015 Climate Change talks in Paris. With dry seasons that last eight to ten months and massive poverty, the Sahel region requires focused, urgent attention to capitalize on its natural assets in order to generate more income and jobs, especially for the youth. These assets include agriculture; cattle, which accounts for most of the breeding in Africa; and the giant Niger and Senegal rivers with their potential for irrigation. Solutions do not lie in massive funding alone. They must also look to ideas, even seemingly simple ideas, that can prove dynamic.
